Extradition to Azerbaijan

According to Главком: Ukraine has extradited a 45-year-old Azerbaijani citizen to his home country. The man had been fighting on the Russian side against Ukrainian forces. He was detained near Ocheretyne on June 21, 2024. Azerbaijani authorities have already formally charged him with participating in illegal armed formations abroad, an offense that carries a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years. This case highlights the complex international dimensions of the conflict in Ukraine, where foreign nationals have been recruited by Russian forces.

Case Details

According to information from the National Police and the Office of the Prosecutor General, the detainee is a native of the city of Ajikabul. Prior to his military involvement, he worked as an English teacher, translator, and tour guide. In October 2023, he signed a two-year contract with the Russian army. He subsequently served in the 1st Brigade of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) as an assistant grenade launcher operator in an assault company. During his service, he used the call signs "Lev" and "Rafik" and was directly involved in combat operations in the Donetsk region against Ukrainian troops.

The extradition was carried out by Ukrainian law enforcement agencies in coordination with the Department of International Police Cooperation. The Azerbaijani side has guaranteed that the detainee's rights will be upheld in accordance with international humanitarian law. The man will now face justice in his home country, where the formal charges will be presented to him.

This extradition represents a significant step in international cooperation between Ukraine and Azerbaijan in combating illegal armed formations.

It also underscores the commitment of both nations to adhere to international law and human rights standards, even in cases related to armed conflict. This precedent may have broader implications for future interstate collaboration in security and judicial matters.
