Ukraine and Hungary’s New Government

According to Главком: Ukraine and the recently formed Hungarian government have agreed to hold expert-level consultations concerning the rights of the ethnic Hungarian minority. The first online meeting between delegations is scheduled for May 19, with representatives from the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia taking part. This agreement was announced by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Hungary’s Foreign Minister Anita Orbán.

Both sides have fully assembled and appointed their official negotiating teams. In preparation for the meeting, Sybiha raised the topic of Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.

“We are ready to cooperate with the new Hungarian government on all matters of our bilateral agenda, including the issue of national minorities, with the aim of restoring trust and good neighborly relations between our countries,” he stated.

Expectations and Discussions

Anita Orbán, for her part, expressed hope for a constructive dialogue and tangible progress on issues affecting the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia.

“Discussions will begin as early as tomorrow, which could lay an important foundation for a swift and satisfactory resolution of minority rights issues. I hope the dialogue will be constructive, and that negotiations will soon bring noticeable progress for the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia,” she added.

A key feature of the negotiation process is the involvement of representatives from the Hungarian community in the Transcarpathian region. The goal of the talks is to find practical and reliable solutions that satisfy both parties. Additionally, Hungary’s newly elected Prime Minister Péter Magyar plans to visit Poland on May 20, where he will hold talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and meet with President Karol Nawrocki.

In the context of regional issues, Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador following a massive Russian air attack on the Transcarpathian region on May 13. Notably, Hungary’s previous foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, never once summoned the Russian ambassador after Russian strikes on Transcarpathia during the years of the full-scale war.

This agreement on expert consultations underscores the readiness of both Ukraine and Hungary to revive dialogue on national minority rights, marking an important step in strengthening bilateral relations. Including representatives of the Hungarian community in the negotiation process could enhance transparency and effectiveness in addressing current issues. Furthermore, Hungary’s reaction to Russian aggression signals a shift in its foreign policy approach, which could positively impact regional stability.

The upcoming discussions between Ukraine and Hungary are crucial not only for addressing minority rights but also for shaping the future of bilateral relations. As both nations navigate this delicate issue, it's important to consider the conditions set by Hungary’s new leadership for these talks, which could significantly influence the outcome of the negotiations and the well-being of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia.
