Deadly Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship: Ukrainian Crew Members Safe
Hantavirus Outbreak on the MV Hondius
According to Главком: A hantavirus outbreak (Andes strain) has been reported aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, with eight passengers falling ill and three fatalities. The situation was confirmed by sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. According to their data, five crew members who are Ukrainian citizens show no signs of infection and remain in good health.
The outbreak began during a voyage from the Argentine port of Ushuaia. The virus identified on the vessel belongs to the Andes strain, which has the potential for human-to-human transmission, though this phenomenon has only been documented in Argentina and Chile. As noted by Mykola Ganich, spokesperson for the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, hantavirus is generally transmitted from rodents to humans, and the risks of infection in Ukraine are considered low:
'Currently, natural foci in Ukraine do not contain the strain of the virus that is transmitted from person to person. Therefore, such risks are unlikely.' - Mykola Ganich
Incubation Period and Treatment
The incubation period for hantavirus ranges from 1 to 6 weeks, or up to 42 days. 'That is the maximum quarantine period that people are currently under there,' Ganich stated. Ukraine records dozens of hantavirus infections each year, primarily presenting as hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. However, according to Ganich, all individuals infected with hantavirus in Ukraine last year recovered, demonstrating the healthcare system's ability to provide necessary care.
Additionally, in Poland, one person was placed under a seven-day sanitary observation due to potential contact with passengers from the MV Hondius. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not declared a global alert regarding hantavirus. At the same time, the most dangerous varieties of hantavirus, including the Andes strain, are linked to rodent species not found in Ukraine.
Treatment for hantavirus is symptomatic, as no specific antiviral medications exist. Mykola Ganich noted that if patients experience symptoms such as:
- sudden high fever,
- fever,
- headache,
- nausea,
they should consult a doctor and report any possible contact with rodents. This will help the physician get a complete picture before making a decision.
The hantavirus situation on the MV Hondius requires careful monitoring, but currently poses no threat to Ukraine.
The hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius highlights the importance of international cooperation in public health, as the virus, though considered unlikely to affect Ukraine, could have implications for travelers and society at large. Monitoring the situation and timely public information are crucial for preventing the spread of infection and maintaining safety on a global scale.
As the situation with the hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius unfolds, it's important to note that similar incidents have occurred recently. In fact, the UN Chief has expressed support for Spain in light of a recent hantavirus outbreak on another cruise ship.
