Sheep and Goat Farming Support Boosted by 50% Under New Government Initiative
Government Expands Subsidies for Sheep and Goat Farming Operations
According to Мін. Економіки: The Ukrainian government has broadened its financial assistance program for sheep and goat farming, including support for farm construction. This move is designed to aid producers engaged in raising these livestock. Newly eligible for aid are breeding sheep and goats, with partial reimbursements now covering farms and complexes dedicated to housing these animals.
For agricultural businesses that relocated from frontline areas after February 24, 2022, the reimbursement rate for building or renovating farms has been raised to 50%. Compensation for projects completed in 2025 will become available in 2026. Deputy Minister Taras Vysotskyi stated:
“Expanding state support to sheep and goat farming is a critical step toward restoring livestock numbers and developing these sectors.” - Taras Vysotskyi
As of early 2026, Ukraine had 761,100 sheep and goats, marking a nearly 30% decline compared to the pre-war period. This drop highlights the urgent need for active measures to revive and grow the industry.
Why This Initiative Matters for Agriculture
Broadening state aid for sheep and goat farming is a key effort to improve Ukraine’s agricultural sector, which has suffered major losses due to the war. Given the sharp decrease in livestock, this initiative could help not only restore production but also strengthen the country’s food security.
Furthermore, supporting agricultural producers is expected to attract investment into farms, boosting regional economies in the process.
In addition to the support for sheep and goat farming, the government has also introduced measures to assist farmers with essential inputs. This comprehensive approach aims to stabilize agricultural production across various sectors. For instance, a recent initiative provides financial aid for fertilizer purchases, which is crucial for enhancing crop yields and supporting overall food security in the country.
