Eruption of the Levotobi Laki-Laki volcano in Indonesia
According to glavcom.ua: For the second day, the eruption of the Levotobi Laki-Laki volcano continues in Indonesia. This is reported by 'Glaсkom' citing The Independent.
As a result of the eruption, a large cloud of lava and ash has formed, leading to flight cancellations and school closures. The clouds of lava and ash reached a height of up to 4 km.
State of emergency in the region
According to local authorities, the eruption began at noon on July 7. At that time, the ash column reached a height of 18 km. The night before, the volcano became active again. The explosion ejected lava and a new cloud of ash, which rose to 13 km.
There is a threat of earthquakes, as lava is already filling the crater. A state of emergency has been declared in the region. Residents and tourists are prohibited from approaching the crater closer than 6 km.
Indonesia is part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire – a region with increased volcanic and seismic activity.
In the affected areas, roads and rice fields are covered with a layer of gray ash. Local residents are advised to limit their time outdoors. So far, there have been no reports of injured or deceased. Nevertheless, residents have been forced to wear masks and leave their homes. Social media is filled with photos and videos showing people fleeing under a rain of ash and hot gravel.
It is worth noting that earlier a tourist survived after falling into the crater of an active volcano in Indonesia.
