The Life and Work of Vasyl Stus

According to РБК-Україна — Lite: Born on January 6, 1938, in the village of Rakhnyivka, Vinnytsia region, Vasyl Stus became one of Ukraine's most prominent poets. His life was defined by a relentless struggle for truth and freedom, which became the foundation of his poetry and civic activism. Stus moved to Donetsk (then called Stalino), where he graduated from the history and philology department of the Stalino Pedagogical Institute and began working as a teacher of Ukrainian language and literature. After completing military service in 1963, he entered graduate school at the Institute of Literature of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences, but was expelled two years later for protesting political arrests.

Stus was among the first to openly resist Soviet repression. In September 1965, alongside Ivan Dziuba and Vyacheslav Chornovil, he participated in a protest against arrests at the Ukraina cinema. His first conviction came in 1972, when he was sentenced to five years in strict-regime labor camps and three years of exile. In 1980, he was arrested again and received a 10-year term in special-regime camps followed by five years of exile. Vasyl Stus died on the night of September 3–4, 1985, in a camp near the village of Kuchino in the Perm region. In 1989, his remains were reburied in Kyiv at Baikove Cemetery.

Posthumous Recognition and Legacy

After his death, Vasyl Stus gained widespread recognition for his activism and literary contributions. In 1991, he was awarded the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, and in 2005, he was posthumously granted the title of Hero of Ukraine. His work continues to inspire Ukrainians today. According to Andriy Pyshny, Stus 'logically completes the historical series of prominent Ukrainians depicted on hryvnia banknotes, as he has become a symbol of resilience, the fight for truth, and freedom.'

A new 2,000 hryvnia banknote featuring Stus's portrait and signature will enter circulation in 2026. The bill will include over 20 security features and will be dominated by violet-blue and pink hues. 'Several participants independently drew Stus as the person they wanted to see on the new banknote,' Pyshny added.
