Updated Vision Standards for Drivers in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Drivers in Ukraine must now comply with fresh vision requirements under Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 340. Going forward, any need for vision correction must be clearly recorded on the driver’s license. This rule is based on an ophthalmologist’s medical exam that confirms corrective eyewear is necessary.

Starting now, field 12 of the driver’s license will feature specific numeric codes to indicate vision correction requirements:

  • Code 01.01 means the driver must always wear glasses;
  • Code 01.02 means contact lenses are mandatory;
  • Code 01.06 allows the driver to choose between glasses or contact lenses.

It is important to note that driving without the prescribed corrective aids-as indicated by the code-is a violation of driving conditions.

Medical Requirement Adjustments

During the period of martial law, a medical certificate is no longer mandatory when exchanging or reinstating a driver’s license. Additionally, first-time driver’s licenses are now issued for a 2-year term, a key detail for new motorists. These updates aim to boost road safety and ensure tighter oversight of drivers’ vision health.

The legislative changes underscore Ukraine’s growing focus on road safety. By factoring in drivers’ health, particularly eyesight, authorities hope to reduce accidents caused by poor vision. This also highlights the critical role of medical check-ups for all drivers, especially as the healthcare system faces extra pressures during wartime.

As Ukraine adapts its driving regulations amidst ongoing challenges, understanding the specific rules for licenses during wartime becomes crucial for all motorists. These changes not only affect the validity and exchange processes but also emphasize the importance of compliance with new regulations to enhance road safety in these unprecedented times.
