IDPs: An Economic Asset for Ukrainian Communities

According to ХВИЛЯ: Dmytro Ivanov, co-founder of the volunteer movement 'Dobrobat', has urged state officials and community leaders to reconsider their perspective on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). He emphasized their significant economic value to local communities through state subsidies and tax contributions, while also detailing housing construction projects for IDPs in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. This call comes as Ukraine continues to manage the long-term integration of millions displaced by the ongoing war.

The Financial Benefit of IDPs

IDPs represent a vital resource for community budgets. Ivanov pointed out that many officials fail to recognize that internally displaced persons are a genuine boon for local economies.

"State subsidies are allocated based on population size. There are communities with budget surpluses. If their population increases, they don't face reverse deductions,"

he explained. According to him, displaced persons who find work and pay taxes contribute directly to the development of the real economic sector.

Furthermore, the 'Dobrobat' volunteer movement is implementing housing projects for IDPs in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. These new homes are being designed to meet modern energy security challenges.

"When constructing housing for internally displaced persons, we also incorporate uninterrupted power supplies, meaning renewable energy sources. This is a 'must-have' now; there's simply no other way,"

Ivanov stressed.

Consequently, internally displaced persons not only replenish community budgets but also foster the development of energy-independent housing, which is critically important under current conditions. IDPs can truly become a 'treasure trove' for Ukrainian towns and villages. This approach can aid not only in economic recovery but also in creating a socially stable environment for displaced individuals, a key factor in the context of the nation's protracted crisis.
