89 Years of Stanislav Kulchytsky: How the Historian Studied the Holodomor and the Revolution

According to Велика українська енциклопедія: On January 10, 2026, we celebrate 89 years since the birth of Ukrainian historian Stanislav Kulchytsky, who was a Doctor of Historical Sciences and a Professor. Stanislav Vladislavovych Kulchytsky was born on January 10, 1937, in Odesa, Ukraine. He received his Doctor of Historical Sciences degree in 1978 and was awarded the title of Professor in 1988. In 1996, Kulchytsky became an honored worker of science and technology in Ukraine.
Scientific Activity
Throughout his career, Kulchytsky researched the history of Ukraine in the 20th century, focusing on important events and phenomena. Among his scientific interests are:
- Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921
- War Communism
- New Economic Policy
- Famine of 1921–1923
- Famine of 1946–1947
- Holodomor of 1932–1933
He is the author of over 100 monographs, textbooks, and reference books, as well as the author and editor of over 3,500 scientific and popular-scientific works.
Kulchytsky also actively participated in editing scientific publications, particularly in the 'Ukrainian Historical Journal' since 1988 and in 'From the Archives of VUChK-GPU-NKVD-KGB' since 1998. Among his scientific publications are 'Ukrainian Historical Collection' (1998–2005), 'Bakhmut Road' (2001–2013), 'Holodomor Studies. Universite du Quebec' (2008–2010), and 'Problems of Ukrainian History: Facts, Judgments, Searches' (1991–2015).
Stanislav Kulchytsky left a significant mark in Ukrainian historiography, especially on issues related to the complex periods in the country's history.
