Champions League Playoff Hopes Dashed for Eintracht Frankfurt and Slavia Prague
Champions League Defeats End Qualification Dreams
According to Главком: Two clubs saw their hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 playoffs extinguished following defeats in their latest matches. Eintracht Frankfurt suffered a 3:2 away loss to Qarabag, with the decisive goal scored in the 94th minute. Slavia Prague also failed to secure points, falling 4:2 to Barcelona, a match where the Catalan side scored two second-half goals to seal the result. The Champions League's new format makes every group stage match critical for qualification.
Group Stage Standings and Future Fixtures
Both clubs are now mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, while two other clubs have already secured their places in the round of 16. Notably, 13 clubs will now compete at a minimum in the playoff's round of 32. Eintracht Frankfurt will host Tottenham Hotspur in their next match on January 28, 2026, while Slavia Prague will play their final group stage fixture away against Pafos.
The President of Azerbaijan also expressed outrage over the officiating in the Qarabag vs. Eintracht match, accusing the referees of bias against his nation's club.
“I sincerely congratulate Qarabag Football Club on their brilliant victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the main stage of the Champions League! Despite the unfair and biased decisions of the referee, justice prevailed,” stated the President of Azerbaijan.
The elimination of Eintracht and Slavia underscores the intense competition within the Champions League groups. For Eintracht, it necessitates a strategic review ahead of next season, whereas Slavia can now focus fully on domestic competitions. The Azerbaijani President's comments on refereeing highlight the perennial debate over fairness in high-stakes international tournaments and may prompt UEFA to review officiating standards in matches involving Azerbaijani clubs.
