Authorities Intercept Illegal Newborn Sale in the Carpathian Region

According to Главком: Law enforcement and prosecutors in Ukraine's Ivano-Frankivsk region have prevented the sale of a newborn infant. A 30-year-old woman from the Kyiv region attempted to sell her baby boy for $20,000, disguising the transaction as a surrogacy arrangement. She was arrested immediately after handing over the child and receiving the payment, and has been charged under Article 149, Part 3 of Ukraine's Criminal Code.

Case Details and Timeline

According to investigators, the woman-already a mother of five minor children-decided to sell her unborn son while she was six months pregnant. She set the price at $20,000. To conceal the true nature of the deal, she attempted to pass it off as a surrogacy agreement. On social media, she posted that she was supposedly carrying someone else's child and was looking for a couple to adopt the baby after birth.

A resident of Ivano-Frankivsk responded to the advertisement. Initially, she paid for the pregnant woman's bus ticket to the city, and after her arrival, covered the costs of medical examinations, apartment rental, food, medicine, and prenatal expenses. The buyer also allegedly paid a deposit of 10,000 Ukrainian hryvnias. On July 2, 2026, the suspect gave birth to a healthy boy at the city's perinatal center.

The very next day, the women backdated a fake surrogacy contract inside the hospital ward. This document was intended to create the illusion that the birth mother had carried the child for genetic parents and was transferring custody legally. The final handover was scheduled for July 6 in the courtyard of the perinatal center. The suspect handed over the newborn, received $20,000, and signed a receipt stating she would have no future claims to the child. Law enforcement officers arrested her immediately afterward.

Prosecutors from the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Prosecutor's Office charged the woman with human trafficking involving a minor (Article 149, Part 3 of Ukraine's Criminal Code). The penalty for this offense carries up to 15 years in prison. The suspect has been placed in pretrial detention with the option of posting bail set at half a million hryvnias. She is currently being held in a detention facility.

In addition to her newborn son, the suspect has five other children. Only her youngest three-year-old son lives with her; the other four reside with their grandmother in the Kyiv region. Child protection services are now overseeing the welfare of the suspect's children and ensuring the safety of the infant. Investigators report that the suspect's husband and parents were aware of her intentions, and searches have been conducted at their residences. Separately, in the Volyn region, a pretrial investigation has been completed against a 38-year-old woman accused of trafficking her own young child.

This case highlights serious shortcomings in the child and family protection system, as well as the urgent need for stricter oversight of surrogacy-related activities.

The situation has alarmed social services, which now must secure the safety of the suspect's children and take protective measures. Meanwhile, law enforcement continues its investigation, which may reveal further details about potential human trafficking networks in Ukraine.

This incident in Western Ukraine is not an isolated case, as similar situations have arisen in other regions. For instance, a mother in the Volyn region recently faced charges for attempting to sell her 6-year-old son for $25,000. Such alarming trends highlight the growing concern over child trafficking and illegal adoptions in the country. To understand more about this troubling issue, read about the case in Volyn here.
