Netherlands Carries Out First Euthanasia on a Child Under 12
Euthanasia for Children in the Netherlands
According to Главком: The Netherlands has performed its first euthanasia on a child younger than 12 years old, following a legal expansion enacted two years ago. The updated law now permits euthanasia for children aged 1 to 12. Previously, the procedure was only allowed for newborns and individuals over the age of 12. The country first legalized euthanasia in 2002.
Dutch Health Minister Sophie Hermans confirmed that the child who underwent euthanasia was suffering from a severe, incurable disease. The conditions for administering euthanasia to a child include:
- unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement;
- mandatory involvement of parents in the decision-making process;
- doctors must ensure the child’s wishes are taken into account.
In general, euthanasia can only be carried out at the patient’s voluntary request, after a doctor confirms unbearable suffering and no chance of recovery.
Ethical Considerations and Legislative Initiatives
This case marks a significant milestone in the evolution of euthanasia legislation in the Netherlands, where issues of personal choice and medical decision-making are increasingly prominent. The legal changes reflect a growing debate over the right to die with dignity, while also underscoring the importance of ethical considerations in medical practice-especially regarding vulnerable groups such as children. This development may also influence future discussions on euthanasia and assisted dying laws in other countries.
