New Ukraine-Romania Border Crossing: Opening Date and Capacity Details
Construction of a New Border Crossing in Zakarpattia
According to Главком: Work is underway in Zakarpattia to build a permanent border crossing point at Bila Tserkva – Sighetu Marmației on the frontier with Romania. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2024. To facilitate traffic sooner, a temporary crossing for passenger vehicles, using interim infrastructure, is planned to open in June of this year.
As noted by Serhii Sukhomlyn, 'construction is planned to be finished by the end of the year.'
Infrastructure of the New Crossing Point
The new facility's infrastructure will feature:
- Three lanes for passenger vehicles;
- Three lanes for freight transport;
- One dedicated lane for buses.
The crossing's projected daily capacity will be 600 cars, 30 buses, and 350 trucks. This represents a significant boost to border efficiency, as existing crossing points can currently process no more than 400 trucks per day. This development is part of broader efforts to improve Ukraine's connectivity with the European Union.
Currently, five road border crossings and one ferry crossing operate on the Ukraine-Romania border. Of these, only two-Porubne – Siret and Dyakovo – Halmeu-process freight trucks. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved an agreement with the Romanian government to open the new crossing point on Tuesday, 02.04.2026. In a related move, Ukraine and Moldova have also signed a protocol amending their agreement on border checkpoints, indicating intensified regional cooperation in this area.
The construction of this new crossing is a crucial step in enhancing cross-border connectivity between Ukraine and Romania. Increasing border capacity will not only streamline freight transport but also foster stronger trade and economic ties between the two nations. The opening of the temporary crossing in June will help alleviate queues and delays at existing checkpoints while the main construction continues.
As traffic increases at border points, especially during peak seasons like Easter, the need for enhanced security measures becomes critical. This is evident from the recent deployment of new scanners at the Polish border, which aims to manage the surge effectively.
