After the strike on Kyiv: 6 thousand apartment buildings without heating prepare for water drainage

Kyiv, buildings without heating
Після атаки на столицю: 6 тисяч житлових будинків залишились без опалення та готуються до зливу води.

Critical situation in Kyiv after the shelling

According to Главком: After a massive combined strike by the Russian Federation on Kyiv, which occurred on January 9, 2023, the city's utility services received orders to drain water from internal building systems. This decision was made due to the fact that 6 thousand apartment buildings were left without heating. Officials and educational institutions are already preparing to evacuate residents.

Oleksii Kucherенко, a member of parliament and first deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy and Housing and Communal Services, noted that the situation is critical. Residents of the buildings affected by the lack of heating may face serious difficulties.

Options for residents

According to Kseniia Semenova, president of the KAI, there has already been a problem in the upper dormitories at their university. She emphasized that if there is a command from the city, they will also be forced to drain the water. In such a case, residents will have three options:

  • go home,
  • move to the lower dormitories,
  • buy a winter sleeping bag.

Maria Berlinska, a representative of the local authorities, commented that for hundreds of thousands of people this means that in just a few days they will not be able to stay in their own apartments. The situation in Kyiv remains complicated, and utility services are working to resolve the heating issue.

This incident underscores the vulnerability of Kyiv's infrastructure in the context of military actions affecting the population's livelihood.

The absence of heating in many homes may lead to serious social and humanitarian consequences, including an increase in the number of homeless and needy. Authorities and utility services must take urgent measures to ensure the safety and comfort of residents during the winter.
