Playoff: The philologist explained how to write this word correctly
The Ukrainian language contains many words whose spelling may raise questions or mistakes. One such word is the term 'playoff'. This word often causes errors in the media, and philologist Olga Vasylieva spoke about it.
In the broadcast of the 'Language Question' segment, she explained that there are no separate words 'play' or 'off' in the Ukrainian language, so they are written together. According to the current rules of Ukrainian spelling, 'playoff' is written as one word.
'According to the current spelling rules (§35), we write playoff together, like body art. And without duplication, because we only retain it in proper names: Michelle Pfeiffer (Pfeiffer),' Olga Vasylieva explained.
Despite the rules, it is very common to see variants of the spelling 'playoff' with a hyphen, such as 'play-off', or even in the Russian variant 'play-off'. However, such variants are incorrect, and the linguist noted this.
The philologist points out that the rule of writing the word 'playoff' together also applies to other football-related anglicisms, such as 'outside', 'inside', 'offside', 'overtime'. All of them are written together without a hyphen, which corresponds to the principles of the English language, where 'playoffs' is written together.
The correct spelling of the word 'playoff' is together, without hyphens. The Ukrainian language has its own rules for the transcription of English terms, which is important to adhere to for maintaining the correct language connection.
