Poland Moves to Strip Zelensky of the White Eagle Order Over UPA Controversy
Ukraine-Poland Tensions Escalate Over Military Unit Renaming
According to Главком: A growing diplomatic rift between Ukraine and Poland has been triggered by the renaming of a Ukrainian military unit in honor of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, via decree No. 440/2026, granted the honorary designation 'named after the Heroes of the UPA' to the Special Operations Center 'North.' This decision was made to revive historical traditions of the national army and in recognition of the unit's exemplary combat performance.
Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, traveled to Poland to meet with Polish diplomats, as the situation raised concerns at the diplomatic level. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that diplomatic efforts had failed and called for direct, honest dialogue between Presidents Karol Nawrocki and Volodymyr Zelensky. He emphasized that
'before emotions destroy our solidarity, which was born in the face of the Russian threat'
.
Poland's Response and Ukraine's Reaction
In response, Polish President Karol Nawrocki proposed considering the revocation of Volodymyr Zelensky's White Eagle Order, Poland's highest state honor. No official decision has been made yet regarding Zelensky's order, but the matter will be discussed at a meeting of the Order's Chapter scheduled for June 8, 2026. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha noted that the escalation benefits neither Ukrainians nor Poles.
Meanwhile, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz criticized the decision to name the unit after the 'UPA heroes,' calling it unacceptable for Polish society and urging Ukrainian authorities to reconsider. A group of Polish public figures, journalists, artists, and former members of the democratic opposition issued a joint statement, signed by:
- Zbigniew Bujak
- Władysław Frasyniuk
- Paweł Kasprzak
- Cezary Łazarewicz
- Piotr Niemczyk
- Andrzej Seweryn
- Krzysztof Skiba
As of now, the situation remains tense, and Ukrainian-Polish relations continue to face challenges that require urgent resolution to prevent further deterioration.
This incident underscores the complexity of historical ties between Ukraine and Poland, particularly regarding memories of World War II and the role of the UPA. The importance of dialogue between the two countries is critical for maintaining cooperation amid modern threats, especially from Russia. Future steps by both nations could significantly impact diplomatic relations and regional stability.
As tensions rise between Ukraine and Poland over the controversial naming of a military unit, discussions are intensifying on whether to reconsider the honor given to President Zelensky. This situation has prompted Ukraine to weigh its options regarding the renaming of the Special Forces unit, highlighting the complex historical narratives at play and the potential impact on bilateral relations.
