Accidental Discovery of an Ancient Roman Villa

According to НВ — Техно: On June 8, 2025, authorities announced the chance discovery of an ancient Roman villa hidden beneath the gymnasium of a school in Italy. The archaeological find was made by student activists during a protest that took place in 2021. After restoration work costing 210,000 euros, the villa-dating to the second half of the 2nd century AD-was opened to the public.

Archaeological Investigations

The villa sits in an elite district of the ancient city, not far from the Colosseum, where Emperor Augustus once lived. Archaeologists, including Filippo Coarelli from Italy’s University of Perugia, reported that excavations revealed the names of the building’s former owners: Roman senator Fabius Gallus and Umbria Albina. Known details include:

  • Fabius Gallus likely oversaw part of the city’s water supply;
  • Umbria Albina’s relatives came from the Samnium region near Pompeii.

During restoration, archaeologists cleaned frescoes with floral patterns and stucco ceiling decorations, and in one room they uncovered a mosaic made of large tiles. Graffiti dating to the 1940s or 1950s was also found.

Claudia Marino, a teacher of history and Latin, remarked: 'When it was all over, a group of students told me: There really is something under the school.'

Officials from the Cantieri Narranti cultural heritage project added that 'the visible rooms, now almost completely buried, still retain figural paintings and stucco ornaments up to the vaults.' The discovery of this villa represents a major step in studying the region’s archaeological heritage and history.

This find not only opens new chapters in Rome’s history but also shows how youth activism can lead to significant archaeological breakthroughs. The villa, once owned by prominent Roman figures, could become a key site for further research and boost tourism in this historic area. Such discoveries are vital for raising awareness of cultural heritage and its relevance to modern society.
