Additional Generating Capacity for Kyiv

According to Главком: On February 8, Kyiv plans to activate an additional 9 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity to help stabilize the city's energy system, which has been severely damaged by massive Russian attacks. The power supply situation remains critical, with residents of the capital currently receiving electricity for only up to two hours per day. Repair crews are continuing their work, and energy workers are intensifying efforts to restore damaged infrastructure.

In the night of February 6-7, Russia carried out a large-scale attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing significant damage. To help improve the situation, February 8 saw the highest daily volume of electricity imports on record. Denys Shmyhal, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, stated:

'We are working on comprehensive solutions, including launching additional generating capacity. Today we expect to bring another 9 MW online in Kyiv.' Denys Shmyhal

The State of the Energy Sector

The additional generating capacity is intended to ease the burden on the energy system, which is under severe strain due to ongoing repairs and the consequences of the attacks. The seriousness of the energy situation is further highlighted by the fact that the Bukovel ski resort has partially switched to operating on generators.

The launch of this extra capacity in Kyiv is a crucial step in restoring stability to an energy grid that has suffered serious damage. Given the continued attacks on energy infrastructure, Ukrainian authorities are taking urgent measures to secure power supply, which has become critically important for the capital's residents and other regions. The record level of electricity imports underscores the growing pressure on the energy system, which requires immediate solutions to problems caused by Russian aggression. These developments occur within the broader context of Russia's ongoing campaign to cripple Ukraine's civilian infrastructure during the winter.
