Історичний контекст: атака на священне місце України викликала нові дискусії про минулі події та їхній вплив на сучасність.

Strike on the Dormition Cathedral

According to ХВИЛЯ: The attack on the Dormition Cathedral, a key sanctuary of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and one of Ukraine’s most sacred sites, has sparked outrage across the country. Denis Shitlerman, co-owner and lead designer at Fire Point, weighed in on the incident by drawing historical comparisons. He pointed out that until 1688, the monastery held the status of stauropegion and answered directly to the Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople. After that year, however, it was placed under the authority of the Moscow Patriarch, a shift Shitlerman argues led to the systematic erosion of the Lavra’s distinct identity.

Historical Echoes and Deeper Meaning

Shitlerman also recalled that in 1718, following Mazepa’s defeat, Tsar Peter I ordered his envoys to set the Lavra ablaze, destroying its library and archives. That same year, the Ukrainian version of liturgical language was banned and replaced with Moscow’s. These events, he noted in a post on X (Twitter), highlight a long-running struggle to preserve Ukrainian identity. The post was published on June 15, 2026.

“Godless scum struck the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra - the main shrine of Ukrainian land, a church nearly a thousand years old.” - Denis Shitlerman

Shitlerman further stressed: “As long as Kyiv stands and the Lavra stands, the world sees who here is a millennia-old civilization and who is a misunderstanding that has appropriated someone else’s history.” He concluded with a defiant promise: “We will rebuild everything. As we have rebuilt many times before. And God will return to Russia - exactly the way they deserve. Ballistically.”

Notably, the Lavra’s grounds include the Church of the Saviour at Berestove, where Yuri Dolgoruky - considered the founder of Moscow - is buried. This fact underscores Kyiv’s deep historical roots and its significance in the region’s past. The assault on the Dormition Cathedral highlights not only the cultural but also the historical importance of Kyiv to Ukraine and the broader region, serving as another stark reminder of the enduring struggle to protect Ukrainian heritage, a struggle with deep historical foundations. Shitlerman’s response reflects the sentiments of many Ukrainians who view the Lavra as both a religious and a national treasure, a symbol of their history and culture.

The recent assault on the Dormition Cathedral has reignited discussions about the ongoing threats to Ukraine’s cultural heritage. This incident follows another alarming event where Russian missile strikes targeted the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, undermining previous assurances of safety. Such attacks not only jeopardize historical sites but also reflect a broader struggle for national identity amid ongoing conflict.
