Ukraine Could Produce Up to 20 Strong Films Annually, Says Filmmaker
Antonio Lukich: The State of Ukrainian Cinema Today
According to РБК-Україна — Lite: Ukrainian director and screenwriter Antonio Lukich, a native of Uzhhorod, recently shared his perspective on the country's cinematic potential and the challenges of filmmaking. In an interview, he estimated that Ukraine has between 10 and 20 auteurs capable of creating original work, and expressed confidence that with government support, the nation could produce as many as 20 impactful films each year. Born in 1992, Lukich is a graduate of the Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Kary University of Theatre, Film and Television.
Lukich emphasized the immense difficulty of the craft, stating,
“Every film made is a feat accomplished by one person or an entire group of people. I say this as someone who has made two films. It is extremely hard.”
He has two feature films to his name. His debut, 'My Thoughts Are Silent' (2019), follows a young sound engineer and his mother. It earned a Special Jury Mention at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and won Ukraine's 'Golden Dziga' Award.
A New Wave in Ukrainian Cinema
Lukich's second feature, 'Luxembourg, Luxembourg' (2022), is a tragicomedy starring twin brothers Amil and Ramil Nasirov of the band 'Kurgan & Agregat'. The film premiered in the 'Horizons' competition at the Venice Film Festival and became one of the highest-grossing Ukrainian releases. Currently, Lukich is developing an international project titled 'The Girl Who Screams', which was already pitched at the Karlovy Vary film market.
Beyond film, Lukich has worked on television series, including:

- 'Kings of the Wards'
He is also a member of the European Film Academy. A key driver of the local industry is the state-backed 'Tysiachovesna' program, which funds Ukrainian cultural projects.
