Military Personnel with Injuries: When They Can Be Declared Unfit for Service
The Rivne Regional Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support explained that military personnel who have suffered injuries, traumas, or illnesses during service may be declared unfit for military service with a review after 6-12 months. The decision on unfitness is made by military medical commissions that assess the health status of military personnel.
Procedure for Declaring Unfitness
Temporary unfitness is determined based on injuries, wounds, concussions, or postoperative consequences. Usually, it takes a period of 6 to 12 months to restore health. Personnel who have been declared unfit are discharged from the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the issuance of a certificate of illness.
During their service, many Defenders have suffered injuries, traumas, or illnesses. Such decisions are being made more frequently, and mostly, these military personnel have not fully restored their health. The current health status of a military personnel does not allow them to fulfill their duties, emphasizing the importance of timely medical examinations and assessments of fitness for service. After a repeat examination, the military medical commission makes a decision on the suitability for further service.
This information highlights the importance of medical examinations for military personnel who have sustained injuries during service, as timely assessment of health status can influence their future service. Given the increasing number of injuries among military personnel, clarifications regarding the procedure for declaring unfitness become especially relevant, which can help military personnel receive the necessary support and protect their rights in this challenging time.
