Ihor Fotun was born in Mariupol, Donetsk Oblast, where he also received his education at the Zhdanov Metallurgical Institute, now known as the Priazovskyi State Technical University. Following his studies, he worked at PJSC Azovmash. With the outbreak of war in eastern Ukraine in 2015, Ihor joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He participated in combat operations in the Anti-Terrorist Operation/Joint Forces Operation zone, and in 2017 he was wounded and discharged from service.

However, with the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ihor voluntarily returned to the armed forces to defend his homeland. He actively participated in the defense of Mariupol, demonstrating great bravery and professionalism. According to information from the Boryspil City Council executive committee, he was described as 'sincere, communicative, with a steely masculine character and a big, kind heart – he never refused help to anyone.' Ihor had many friends and loved to sing.
