Chef José Andrés Upgrades School Kitchens to Transform Child Nutrition in Ukraine
José Andrés Launches Initiative in Ukraine
According to Главком: Spanish-American chef José Andrés is joining a major reform of school meals in Ukraine by modernizing three key school kitchens that will serve as hubs for 29 educational institutions. This was announced by Ukraine's First Lady, Olena Zelenska. Andrés's organization, World Central Kitchen, has already provided nearly 300 million meals to families affected by the war in Ukraine. This new project marks a strategic shift from emergency food aid to long-term infrastructure support.
The upgrades will take place in schools in Hrebinky (Kyiv region), Chernihiv, and Horodok (Lviv region). As Olena Zelenska noted, these are designated as 'hub kitchens,' meaning the hot lunches prepared there will be delivered to students not just in those three schools.
"These are not just ordinary kitchens; in the terminology of our reform, they are hub kitchens. The hot meals prepared here will reach students in a whole series of schools via rapid delivery. That's 29 institutions and over 6,500 students! I had the chance to thank Mr. Andrés for his support," stated Olena Zelenska.
The Scale of the School Nutrition Reform
Modernizing school canteens and kitchens is one of the most expensive and large-scale parts of the national reform. To date, over 1,600 school kitchens and canteens have been updated, while 6,000 more still await modernization. José Andrés, who lives in the U.S., has twice been named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People and was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. Ukrainian chef Yevhen Klopotenko is a co-author of the school food reform and the ideologist behind the CultFood project, whose team developed a recipe book for schools containing 500 dishes.
This initiative highlights the efforts of the Ukrainian government and international partners to improve child nutrition, especially under wartime conditions. Support from global figures like José Andrés underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing the social challenges the country faces. Upgrading these facilities will not only ensure better meal quality but also raise the standard of service in educational institutions, a crucial aspect of developing Ukraine's education system overall.
