Locust on the Menu: How Dnipro Prepares a Delicacy from Insects
Chefs in the Ukrainian city have started experimenting with dishes made from locusts, which have become a delicacy in some Asian countries. They offer to prepare this insect as a snack or main dish, as it contains many beneficial nutrients. This innovative approach is gaining certain popularity among local residents.
«We will make two dishes, the first one – we will prepare it in batter, using corn starch and regular flour. The second one – we will simply fry it in a pan with garlic, Ukrainian-style, homemade», – said chef Dmitry Gorbatchev.
«If a person is allergic to shrimp and shellfish, then the person is also contraindicated to eat locusts, as their shell is very similar in composition to the chitin found in shrimp, crayfish, crabs», – emphasized the brand chef.
People are showing interest in consuming locusts, but the question of farming these insects on an industrial scale remains open. Currently, a locust invasion has been recorded in four regions of Ukraine, and authorities are considering the possibility of spreading this insect to other regions of the country.
