The Controversy Surrounding Vladyslav Heraskevych

According to Главком: Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych has been thrust into the spotlight after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended him from the Games for using a 'memorial helmet'. This incident triggered a massive surge in the athlete's social media following: his Instagram subscribers skyrocketed to over 100,000, a dramatic increase from the fewer than 15,000 he had before the Olympics began. The helmet, which carried a political message, violated strict IOC rules prohibiting political demonstrations at the Games.

In an interview with journalist Artem Khudoleiev for the publication 'Glavcom', Heraskevych opened up about his emotional state, his future plans, and his criticism of fellow Ukrainian sports official Serhiy Bubka.

"I am in a rather difficult emotional state, but I am trying to immerse myself in work," said Vladyslav Heraskevich.

His mother and girlfriend had planned to attend the final races on February 13, but his suspension made that impossible. Heraskevych also discussed his physical readiness, noting that in training he had outperformed medal-winning athletes like Axel Jung and Christopher Grotheer.

Petition and Sanctions

Heraskevych and the journalist prepared a petition calling for sanctions against Russian athletes, which was subsequently approved by the Ukrainian government. All Russians named in the petition were sanctioned. Heraskevych also addressed rumors about financial offers he allegedly received.

"That's all a big myth. I never received any offer of $800,000," stated Vladyslav Heraskevych.

The athlete also confirmed he had no contact with Ukrainian IOC members Serhiy Bubka or Valeriy Borzov during the incident.

Heraskevych expressed his dissatisfaction with the actions of his colleagues, stating:

  • "I call once again: Bubka should not hold the title of Hero of Ukraine."

The IOC's gag order preventing Vladyslav Heraskevych from commenting remains in effect until February 25. Despite the challenges, he continues to focus on his athletic career. Funds raised through charitable efforts are directed to a foundation, not to the athlete's personal accounts.

The situation highlights the strict protocols of international sports bodies and the complex challenges athletes face when political and ethical issues intersect with competition. While his suspension could significantly impact his career, it has also galvanized public support and given him a platform. Heraskevych is actively using this heightened profile to advocate for causes he believes in, such as sanctions against Russian athletes, demonstrating his commitment to fighting for what he sees as justice in sports.
