Why Vaccinating Children Matters

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: Parents can breathe easier: according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Ukraine's Ministry of Health (MOH), a mild runny nose and a temperature up to 38.5°C (WHO) or 38.0°C (MOH) are not valid reasons to skip a child's vaccination. This guidance helps clear up common misconceptions and ensures that minor illnesses don't delay essential immunizations.

When Vaccination Is Not Recommended

The list of absolute contraindications is short and aligns with international standards. Vaccination should be postponed or avoided only in these cases:

  • Acute illness with a fever above 38.0°C;
  • A severe allergic reaction to a previous vaccine dose or a known allergy to a vaccine component;
  • Severe immunodeficiency conditions, but only when live vaccines are involved.

It is important to note that non-live (inactivated) vaccines are safe for immunocompromised patients.

In some situations, the immune system may not respond properly to vaccination. This includes cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, individuals taking high doses of steroid hormones, and people living with HIV. During pregnancy, certain live-virus vaccines-such as those for measles, mumps, and rubella-are not recommended.

Delaying vaccination because of minor discomfort can lead to what experts call "delayed vaccination syndrome." This highlights the importance of following professional recommendations to keep immunization schedules on track.

Understanding these contraindications and guidelines is critical for protecting children's health. It empowers parents to make informed decisions, supports herd immunity, and helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Following WHO and MOH advice is essential for the effectiveness of vaccination programs and the overall well-being of the community.

In addition to the recent updates on vaccination guidelines, it's essential for parents to stay informed about the latest recommendations regarding BCG vaccinations for children. Understanding these new rules can further assist in ensuring timely immunizations, which are crucial for maintaining public health. For more details on the updated BCG vaccination protocols, refer to the revised guidelines from Ukraine’s Health Ministry.
