Elderly Woman's Hoarded Apartment Becomes a Health Hazard After Fire in Kyiv
Kyiv Residents Grapple with Hoarding Crisis After Blaze
According to Главком: In the Desnyansky district of Kyiv, residents of a nine-story building on Zakrevskoho Street are dealing with a long-standing nightmare caused by an 81-year-old neighbor, Vera Vasylivna, who has been hoarding trash and belongings in her apartment for over a decade. The situation escalated just before Easter when a fire broke out in her seventh-floor unit. Firefighters had to break down the door because she wasn't home. After the blaze, the apartment was left open, allowing a foul stench to spread throughout the building.
Neighbors have repeatedly appealed to the building's condominium association (OSBB) and city authorities for help. However, the OSBB head explained that he lacks legal grounds to enter the apartment without permission, and the owner's relatives have shown no interest in resolving the issue. The firefighting water also leaked into the downstairs apartment of neighbor Lyudmila, causing mold to appear on her ceiling.
Frustrated Residents Speak Out
Locals are voicing their anger:
“The firefighters smashed the windows and broke down the door. Everything is still like that. The trash heap stinks, and big flies are everywhere,” said neighbor Vera.
Meanwhile, the hoarder herself, Vera Vasylivna, defended her actions: “I won't let them throw things out because those are new items. There are dresses and fabrics in there. How can I let them just discard them?”
The standoff remains unresolved, leaving residents to suffer from the consequences of the hoarding, which has persisted for over ten years. They are now hoping that local authorities will finally step in to enforce a solution. This case highlights the broader challenge of hoarding in urban communities, where existing laws often fail to protect neighbors from such hazards.
