Vilnius Airport Halts Flights Again Due to Balloons from Belarus
Vilnius International Airport Suspends Operations
According to Главком: Vilnius International Airport has once again suspended all flights due to suspected incursions of balloons from Belarusian territory. This marks the latest in a series of disruptions, with the airport having halted operations over ten times since the beginning of October 2025 for similar reasons. The most recent suspension occurred on December 3, 2025. These repeated closures highlight a significant and persistent security challenge for a key European air hub.
Located roughly 30 kilometers from the Belarusian border, the airport has repeatedly closed its airspace since early autumn 2025 due to threats posed by these aerial objects. According to Lithuanian authorities, the balloons are being used by smugglers to illegally transport cigarettes into the European Union. The balloons fly at altitudes of several kilometers, creating a serious hazard to commercial air traffic.
Impact on Aviation
These incidents have led to the cancellation and delay of dozens of flights, disrupting travel for thousands of passengers. In December 2025, Lithuania declared a state of emergency in response to the scale and regularity of these events. The government also temporarily closed border crossings with Belarus and granted expanded powers to security forces, including the authority to use kinetic measures to neutralize aerial objects. This situation underscores the complex security dynamics in the region, where non-traditional threats are impacting critical infrastructure.
The ongoing closures and the declared state of emergency point to the severity of the smuggling problem and the challenges Lithuania faces in securing its airspace. The Lithuanian government, in responding to these threats, has been compelled to take significant steps to protect its borders and aviation sector from potential risks, emphasizing the need for effective, long-term countermeasures.
