Ukrainian UNESCO Schools During the War: How 70 Educational Institutions Are Operating
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Head of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO, Mariana Betza, opened the Second National Forum of the Network of UNESCO Associated Schools in Ukraine. The event was organized by the secretariat of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO with the support of the UNESCO Office in Ukraine, the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), and the Government of Japan. School leaders, students, education experts, and representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Ukraine participated in the event.
Mariana Betza emphasized that the conditions of the aggressive war with the Russian Federation did not prevent 70 Ukrainian UNESCO associated schools from demonstrating a unique experience in supporting students, fostering the creative development of school communities, and engaging in international cooperation. According to the Deputy Minister, Ukrainian educational institutions symbolize Ukrainian resilience and the professional dedication of educators who continue to work even during Russian attacks.
Betza also noted that the participation of representatives of the diplomatic corps in the Forum is an important signal of support for Ukrainian children and teachers. She stated that educational diplomacy has become an important tool for Ukraine's presence in the world, and Ukrainian UNESCO associated schools are shaping a young generation that actively upholds the organization's values.
During the Second National Forum of the Network of UNESCO Associated Schools in Ukraine, the unique experience of Ukrainian schools in supporting students, despite the challenging conditions of war, was highlighted, as well as the important role of educational diplomacy in strengthening international connections and supporting values in the world.
