Texas Giraffe Escape Sparks Search Operation

According to НВ — Техно: A giraffe named Gracey has gone missing in Texas after escaping from a private wildlife sanctuary roughly 100 miles west of San Antonio. The animal's owner, Vic Jones, learned of her disappearance on June 26 at 8:45 a.m. and quickly launched a large-scale search effort involving helicopters, along with a $5,000 reward for any information leading to her recovery. According to Jones, Gracey is currently in a remote, heavily wooded area of Real County, where she faces no immediate danger.

Search Efforts and Unusual Circumstances

Days after the search began, Gracey was spotted in the southern part of the county. Jones noted that

“eventually, she climbed up and was feeding in a spot on a hillside and rocky ledges where none of the other giraffes had ever set foot before”

- Vic Jones. He also confirmed that

“she is not in danger because she is not near people. She is now living in a very, very rugged, heavily forested area”

Real County, where the sanctuary is located, has a population of roughly 2,700 residents. Sheriff Nathan Johnson reported that other exotic animals have gone missing in the county in the past, including:

  • wildebeest
  • water buffalo
  • monkeys
  • zebras

“I’ve had wildebeest, I’ve had water buffalo, I’ve had monkeys, I’ve had zebras-all of them have gone missing. Sometimes we find them, sometimes we don’t,” Johnson said.

Jones also emphasized the challenges of tracking animal escapes, stating, “We’re always two or three days behind on information, so that makes things difficult.” The helicopter search covers approximately 7,500 acres (3,000 hectares), highlighting the scale of the operation to locate Gracey.

The Texas Hill Country region has one of the highest concentrations of captive exotic animals in the United States, underscoring the need for strong oversight and safety measures. The article also mentions an African elephant weighing 13,000 pounds (nearly 6,000 kilograms), illustrating the diversity of species that can be found in local sanctuaries.

The story of Gracey’s disappearance highlights the challenges faced by exotic animal owners, as well as the importance of ensuring safety for both the animals and the surrounding community. Such escapes can point to gaps in the management of exotic species, potentially leading to hazardous situations. The search for Gracey-which includes the use of helicopters-demonstrates the seriousness of the incident and the owner’s determination to find his animal as quickly as possible.
